101 Ways You Can Help Save the Planet Before You're 12!

101 Ways You Can Help Save the Planet Before You're 12!I usually try to borrow books from the library, instead of buying them, in an effort to be a little greener. There are some books, though, that you just have to buy to have the time to fully appreciate. This book 101 Ways You Can Help Save the Planet Before You're 12! is one of those. I have renewed it twice so far and we still haven't had the time to try all of the interesting, eco-projects in it. There are instructions for making an easy solar oven that we are going to try as soon as I can get my hands on a couple of empty pizza boxes (a little more complicated since we make all our own pizzas, which is what we want to try using the solar oven for.)
There is a project to teach kids to be aware of the state of the ozone by planting an ozone garden using bioindicator plants (something I've never heard of but am anxious to try.)
There are instructions for making bat houses, a project my husband and daughter had already done that I've been meaning to share their plans and instructions for.
There are 101 eco-friendly ideas and instructions for kids of all ages (my 4 1/2 year old just loves it): building an outdoor classroom, how-to write a letter to government officials or company heads, making natural shampoos and soaps, mapping the ecosystem in your backyard, teaching your grandparents to go green, starting a worm farm, starting your own eco-club, easy crafts using recycled items, plus too many more to mention even though I would like to. Not only does this book give kids the "how-to" but it also gives them the "why-we-need-to" in a way that's easy to understand. It covers all of the environmental issues we are facing and gives links all through the book to eco-websites where kids can go for additional information.

The only bad thing I can say about this book is that the binding isn't made strong enough to survive all of the action it's getting. I have to go order our own copy before the library copy falls apart.....it's definitely a book you should have in your children's library if you're interested in teaching them how (and why) to be eco-friendly.
