This is the third Max Lucado review I've done. The first was One Hand, Two Hands and the second was Hermie and Friends - A Bug Collection DVD set. We really enjoyed both of them and Hermie a Common Caterpillar was no exception. I really appreciate the lessons that Max Lucado's books teach children.
Hermie a Common Caterpillar is an adorable book, illustrated by Daniel Howarth. The pictures are vividly colored and captivating. In fact my daughter found the pictures almost as entertaining as the story.
The story is about a very plain caterpillar, Hermie, who can't understand why he is so ordinary when there are so many beautiful bugs in the world. Hermie is in for a surprise when he finds out that God has been saving something very special for him. My daughter was on the edge of her seat waiting to find out what that surprise was. I'm sure as an adult you can guess that Hermie turns into a magnificent butterfly proving that, just like everyone else, he is special in his own way.
This book is actually a Level Two Reader so it's aimed at ages 5-8 but the story can be appreciated by children as young as age three.

Book Review: How to be God's Little Princess by Sheila Walsh
Parts of this book are a little old for my five year old, make-up, planning parties, safety when out with friends, internet etiquette and safety they are probably more suited to an eight or nine year old. There were lots of sections that were very helpful such as treating others with respect, proper table manners, being polite. Since it was written as if explaining the proper way to act like a princess and not just a list of dos and don'ts my daughter was quite receptive to the ideas talked about in the book. It opens the doors to many discussions on appropriate behavior and acting with respect towards other people, something that is sadly lacking in this world.
There are fun little quizzes scattered throughout the book e.g: Are You Bold or Bashful? and What's Your Friendship Style? There are also various other puzzles and quizzes.
I would have no problem recommending this book to anyone who is looking for a fun way to teach a young girl about respect, manners and safety.
